What Figure 03 Actually Does

Figure 03 is a humanoid robot with a published height of 5 feet 8 inches, 20 kg payload, 61 kg weight, 5-hour runtime, 1.2 m/s speed, and an all-electric system. Those specs matter because they put the robot near human scale, which is the core argument for humanoids: they can operate in environments built for people.

The deeper story is the sensor and hand redesign. Figure says Figure 03 uses a next-generation camera architecture with higher frame rate, lower latency, and a wider field of view than prior models. It also adds embedded palm cameras for close-range visual feedback during grasps and tactile fingertip sensing designed to detect small forces.

That matters because manipulation is where humanoid robots usually fail. The strongest near-term business cases are still industrial and logistics tasks. Figure's BMW work with Figure 02 focused on sheet-metal loading: picking parts from racks or bins and placing them onto fixtures for downstream welding. That kind of task has a clear cycle, measurable accuracy target, and operational value.

Logistics is another natural proving ground. Figure has published Helix logistics work around package handling and sorting, where the robot has to perceive varied parcels, orient them, and interact with conveyors or workcells. Home tasks like dishwashers, laundry, and tidying are strategically important, but they are harder to turn into near-term enterprise ROI unless the buyer is in home services, elder care, hospitality, or consumer robotics.

When Figure 03 Is a Bad Fit

Figure 03 is a bad fit when the task is already solved by simpler automation. If the job is fixed high-speed pick-and-place, a traditional industrial robot may win. If the job is moving goods on a flat route, an AMR may win. If the job is visual inspection, a camera system may win. Humanoid form should be justified, not assumed.

It is also a bad fit when the buyer wants a general worker without defining the first job. The more general the robot appears, the more disciplined the pilot has to be. Otherwise the project becomes an expensive tour of impressive edge cases instead of an operations tool.
